No, that should be fine. I don't think one bulb will give enough coverage for the sides, you could go with 2X150W though if you wanted.

Yeah, takes a lot to kill them IF they get acclimated to captivity AND you can constantly feed them. I think you were lucky, definitely NOT a beginner's coral. I think they sell them to beginners...

You will get less heat and much more light with T5s. I am a MH guy, I love the look and the results, but if you are set against it because of heat, definitely go t5, you wont be sorry.

Turn off all the pumps, put sand in a big fish net, lower the net to the bottom and dump the sand out slowly. This has worked for me in the past. Works just as well getting sand out.

I agree with oldreefer. I had PCs like 5 years ago when they were the best alternative to MHs. But after switching to MH and seeing some results others have with T5s, PCs are likely to go the way...

probably, but the depth of the tank its on is the biggest issue; remember, your trachs are going to be on the sand and PCs don't seem to penetrate that deep into the water.

Yup, did it for many years, just make sure to get distilled and not spring water. Distilled water TDS is 0 and spring water TDS is pretty high (200+).
