Look up beam strength in a statics text. I used 1/4" plate glass on a 2' high wood tank for years. It's left as an exercise for the student to determine the difference for 1/2" glass.

A more secure method to seal the joints than just silicone would be to heavily scuff up the acrylic for glass tape and epoxy. Not as good as a bead welder but much more practical for the DIYer.
