Nick, I also live 15 min from New Hyde Park, it is in western Nassau County right on the border of Nassau and Queens. A nice central location to all parts of the island.

Sounds like a plan. You could put black silicone on the inside side walls of the tank before you put the eggcrate to hide it, or you can just paint the outside of the tank as you said.

If you are using eggcrate then there's no need to use hydroton, as it would just be empty beneath the eggcrate. Hydroton is a bottom layer for people who don't use a false bottom with eggcrate.
