If you turn it off why not do this during the day...
If you turn it off why not do this during the day cycle? It would make better sense to run the skimmer at night to help stabilize PH due to CO2.

Red cyanobacteria is an indication of water quality. I would get a iron based phosphate absorber such as phosban. The cleanup crew is not the answer to water quality issues.

This is what worked for me. Drip Kalkwasser to help precipitate phosphates. Use of phosban to absorb phosphate. Seeded aquarium with GARF gunk which had a lot of pods, fauna, and coraline spores.
