If you're running carbon thru a cannister filter, you'll be ok. It's a sealed system like a closed loop. A hang on back filter would work ok for carbon too. Just cover it all up with the tank.

What type of skimmer is it? Hang-on-back, in-sump (pump under water), recirculating (over-flow fed), etc? If the feed pump is in the sump, the water level in your sump can affect the water level...

I use the Gen-X. I've never had any issues with it. I can't compare as it's all I've used in my reactor. Premium Aquatics recommended it when I bought my reactor from them.
