Lots of people DIY top off float switches over here in the UK, popular commercial brands are the deltec and tunze - the tunze is held in high regard due to its optical sensors.

I think I will go for a 10mm base piece (routed) and then a 5mm 'secondary' piece on top of that.
Thinking about the design the main tube will probably be around 65"...
