External = Out of the sump or in a "dry" environment.
Internal = Submersed in the sump or "underwater".

Do you have a canister filter? Run one of those until you can replace your main pump.

refugiums are nice just because they help with nitrate control and also offer "creatures" introduced to the main tank as food reef or FOWLR! I don't believe wet/drys provide that.
