The presumed idea is that it releases minerals like iron that may be useful. Iron is sometimes useful, but can be obtained in other ways. I don't use mud in my refugia.

Yes. At least it is not worse. Bake it first if you want it to raise pH as well as alkalinity.

I would not assume it eliminates it. Organisms on the rock may die in transit. If there is not much there, then that may not happen, but if there are creatures on it, some will die by being exposed...
