hi;to help answer your question,have the same setup running 13 yrs.no nitrates-no problems.But i have macro alges in the display tank and only use distilled water-which contains zero nutriants.

mk;mine was one of the first dsb.13yrs,but i think its how much you feed your tank.As lao tsou says do nothing to excass.Too many addatives and too much food equals clogged dsb.
