If you do the recommended monthly water changes you will come out cheaper (depending on the size of your tank, in about a year) with an RO/DI and guarantee the quality of water.

I would get something and release the pressure...
I would get something and release the pressure inside where there is contact with the wire. Like a really small screwdriver or thin metal. If it is able to be taken apart then you can remove the back...
