Thats all you really can do, I think you should be okay. Depending on the type of sprinkles, you might see an algae bloom since some can contain large amounts of Phosphate.
Just do another water...

I wouldn't. It will stress the fish thinking that there is some other dominant fish in the tank while the fish fights its own reflection. It is a good way to catch a fish, yes, but otherwise, no.

I think it works that way because the more closed you have it, the more the impellar is just spinning the water around, rather than actually moving it. Didn't think of it that way till now.
