i know what you mean, using a valve to restrict a pump seems kinda counter productive. for $50 the mag 5 does look very good. my mag 7 ran without any maintenance or problems for almost 2 years...

317gph is with no head loss, at 5 feet it's approx 135gph. a little on the low side imo. the 1260 will give you around 400-450gph at 5 feet
