sand sifter

Is there any type of fish that wil sift the sand eating algie as well as left over food

ozyreefa 01/05/2008 08:39 AM

there is a type of gobie i think, the only problem is they tend to dust your corals with the sand, yes they are called sleeper gobies (Valenciennea)

Dragon Goby or Bullet Goby I have a Dragon. He will tear up the sand bed. One week he moves it one way then moves it back. Your rock has to be firmly on the glass. He moves that much sand but yes sand will get all over lower corals.

Dragon goby, you will get tired of the sand storms.

Do they cost much? Are they very commen?

laserjim 01/05/2008 08:21 PM

Not much..20.00 -30.00. Pretty common around here.

ahullsb 01/05/2008 08:26 PM

I agree with the above posted. They are cool for awhile, but they constantly kick up sand and make your water look more cloudy. Plus they litter sand all over your corals, which is very irritating to them. I'd try something else.

Jake_07 01/05/2008 09:28 PM

like what

Potsy 01/05/2008 09:34 PM

How about nassarius snails? They spend most of their time fully submerged in the sand and then erupt when it's feeding time. They need to be fed meaty foods though. Cerith snails are good sand stirrers too.

i cant get snails where i live i dont know why but lfs just dont stock them and i live in aus so there arnt many online shops

ozyreefa 01/06/2008 12:47 AM

Jake_07 01/06/2008 01:33 AM

I live in noosa on the sunshine coast. where do you live ??

stuccodude 01/06/2008 02:06 AM

i have a diamond goby and yes the first 5 days my water was filled with small particles but i run a filter sock and all the fine sand is gone and the little dude is the hardest working fish in my tank, very cool fish.

demonsp 01/06/2008 02:12 AM

IMO if you dont have a sandsifting goby for your SB then you will never have a well sifted and crisp SB.They can cause rock slides and do cover coral but like my clam and plate they just remove.
This guys Sb cleaning performance outwieghs any faults
Though a 50 gallon is a little small but my daimond eats frozen , pellet and flake so he wont starve.

Im on the gold coast, so im not sure wether it would be practical or safe to transport the guys that far by road, but if you can get someone to drive you down here it will be well worth your while, there are two fully reef catering stores within 10 minutes of my house as well as Coral Plantations(about 30 mins drive from my house). They have the biggest selection of corals and inverts you will ever see in a LFS. Check out their website www.coralplantations.com and look for the cleanup crew section.

ozyreefa 01/06/2008 03:32 AM

Also check out www.gnsaquarium.com.au. These guys just won the "Paws and Claws" Magazine award for the best aquarium in Queensland

Jake_07 01/06/2008 06:35 AM

I dont think ill be able to get any one to dive me down but next time we go down for the theme parks of any thing ill defently check it out.

Jake_07 01/06/2008 06:42 AM

Coral Plantations looks awsome i wish they had an online shop

ozyreefa 01/06/2008 06:51 AM

Give them a call, they may be able to arrange delivery or something, they are pretty good with stuff like that

zotzer 01/06/2008 09:28 AM

I second the idea of finding some nassarius and cerith snails. I'd bet those LFS could arrange shipping for you...snails are pretty easy shippers.

Good luck!
Tracy

ok thanks for your help

FOSELONE 01/06/2008 09:04 PM

definately a diamond gobie...hes a bottom dweller...he wont swim to the top that much like the other gobies dropping sand everywhere...you could also try some sand sifting starfish...
