Two little Fishes Phosphate Reactor Question

I setup my Little Fishes Phosphate reactor several weeks ago, I think I follow instructions but I'm having some problems.

My bottom sponge keeps coming unseated and eventually floats upward and causes all my phosban to be pushed out of the reactor.

This is my setup, which I though is what instructions said

Plate (with holes) -> Sponge -> Phosban -> plate -> sponge.

Do I got something out of order?

I have my flow dialed back quite a bit.

Thx

Sounds like you set it up correctly.

check and see how much tension is on the little sponge (i.e. interference fit) around the center shaft...Otherwise is it possible to put a larger outside diameter rubber o-ring (buna-n or nitrile, i think viton could be toxic) around the shaft pressing lightly against the foam insert to keep it in place?

That is exactly how I have mine set up and I don't have that issue. What kind of pump are you using with it? Perhaps too much flow?

I agree with Todd^^^^ Too much flow..

I think you should be using a maxijet 400 for them...

hansnfrans 12/19/2007 06:53 AM

I use a maxi 1200 on mine and don't have this problem. A dirty sponge piece can cause this to happen.....

fijiblue 12/19/2007 07:44 AM

A maxi 400 is def more suitable for this application.

size of the pump dosent matter it can be throtled back. How much media do you have in the reactor and how long has it been sence you have cleaned the foam pads

I have a MJ 400 and actually have it dial back about 15%.

I put one container of Phosban media in it, 100? or is it 150mg? forget.

Hmm well thanks for the feedback, I'll keep an eye on it and see what happens.
