My test of AZNO3 - updated daily- suppose to remove nitrates

I have a 210g tank
asmg4x skimmer with recirc mod and gate valve
I am using pure poly pads
about 200lbs of LR
240lbs of LS
I feed every other day about 10 cubes of formula 2 (5 in the morning and 5 at night)

9" queen trigger
5" humu trigger
6" honeycomb foxface

my nitrates 160ppm

My first day of dosage:
10 drops

Casshern 10/31/2007 03:50 PM

this stuff works well. It sometimes irritates softies, but otherwise I'd recommend it to anyone

cthetoy 10/31/2007 03:58 PM

My nitrates are quite high as well due to my heavy bioload. Do you an algae problem with your high nitrates? Melev on another thread posted a great azno3 daily update as well and today it came down to 5ppm from 125ppm after a little more than a month.

Puffalicious 10/31/2007 04:10 PM

does this stuff affect the benefical bacteria in the tank and create a "mini-cycle" ?

saltyESQ 10/31/2007 04:26 PM

I have a hair algea problem.

laverda 11/01/2007 01:17 AM

You need a good skimmer to use this, but I have had good results on my rather small skimmer and filter sock set up. My filter socks clog up much faster when using it. I only dose at half the recomonded rate because I only have a ASM G2 on my 240.

Salty You propably have a Phosphate problem with hair algae. I find Blue life phosphate contorll workes very well for me and again I dose at 50% the recomonded rate.

Thanks, I will try the blue life when I get nitrates under control.

I tested after 1st day, nitrate still at 160ppm

I added the 2nd days dose. Although I ran into a problem. I dosed 20 drops and then realized that I couldn't tell if the drops fell or got sucked back into the bottle. So I dosed another 20 and I made sure 20 drops fell in the tank.

so I either double dosed or dosed correctly.

I also had to clean out the skimmer, which was particularly smelly and nasty.

lol... you need to turn the lights on and have a cup of coffee mike... lol

raise your magnesium high then your hair algae will be gone.

day 3

nitrate 160ppm

I added 30 drops

I also made some changes to the tank. I rehooked up the skimmer feeder to the overflow as I found the reason why it kept overflowing (stupid salt build up). I also turned on my closed loop and there is a lot more circulation in the tank.

But I had to turn off my refuge light because it had been on for almost 2 weeks and I noticed a smell of burning plastic.

saltyESQ 11/03/2007 10:13 AM

Day 4:

nitrate 160ppm

I dosed 80 drops

I turned on my fuge light and its going on a 12 hour cycle.

I also noticed that my cheato has really been growing since I was leaving the light on 24/7.

I also have to continually empty the the skimmer or the rooms smells like skim.

doing changes to the tank can effect your results because you are adding variables to your experiment...technically these changes restarted the experiment
I dosed 80 drops
upping the dosage can also effect the results

not trying to shoot you down
just trying to say that if you are doing an experiment you are not supposed to change anything after its running
because these changes can alter your results

saltyESQ 11/03/2007 02:24 PM

The directions on the bottle require the doser to increase the dose.

coast2coast7390 11/03/2007 07:52 PM

why would they want you to increase the dose if its supposed to lessen the amt of nitrates in the water

why not just start with a high dose

saltyESQ 11/03/2007 08:04 PM

the directions have you start with small doses and increase and then over a period of time you are suppose to decrease.

saltyESQ 11/04/2007 11:30 AM

Day 5

Nitrate 160ppm

Dosed 160 drops

I accidently left the PC's on all night, poor fishies they couldn't go to sleep.

saltyESQ 11/05/2007 01:05 PM

day 6:

nitrate 160ppm

dosed 350 drops

Today I should recieve my filter socks from MD and I am going to put one on the overflow tube.

Bebo77 11/05/2007 02:46 PM

you dose 350 drops.. you mean to tell me you counted to 350... please tell me you didnt do that...

Puffalicious 11/05/2007 02:53 PM

when are you suppose to see the nitrates drop? I thought after a week you should have seen something already...

saltyESQ 11/05/2007 05:54 PM

yes I counted all 350 drops.

:o

But after 5 days you stop dosing with drops and begin dosing 8ml per gallon.

Also I just noticed on the bottle next to the amount of drops is the conversion into ml. :(

As to when I should see a drop in nitrate, I have no clue. Better be sooner than later as I would like to add more fish.

Casshern 11/05/2007 07:18 PM

In the past, I never really even measured it out. It's supposedly an enzyme that increases metabolism. I just squirted the stuff in and it worked out well for me

agsansoo 11/06/2007 01:32 AM

tagging along

saltyESQ 11/06/2007 12:26 PM

day 6

nitrate 160ppm

dose 40ml

saltyESQ 11/07/2007 01:02 PM

day 7

nitrate 160ppm

dosed 40ml

anyone know when I should see a decrease in nitrate?

d0cdave 11/07/2007 01:17 PM

What's the recommended dosage for your water volume and bioload?

Is it a chemical or a type of bacteria?
