Tips STN and other corals STN completely
 

Looking for some factors that people think contribute to STN.

I have a large slimmer and a Tort that is STNing right now.

Current water parameters
CA 415
ALK 8.8
PH 8.3
salinity 1.026
Temp 79 (on controller w/Chiller, heaters)

Can anyone think of something I've missed?

Flow? I was in the same boat for the last week. I lost a huge stag. I had it for over a year growth was great and then I noticed some recession on the base, kept my eye on it and then it just progressed up the main branch. I took it out, fragged the branches and gave them away. On the bright side it gave me room to add a few new pieces. All my other colonies are fine.
Temp 77-78, PH 8.0-8.2, DKH 9, Calcium 420, S.G. 1.025. I currently use two Seio 620's. I think I am going to be adding 2 Koralia 4's. Are the colonies wild or AC?

Jason, did you calibrate your refractometer with 53mu to 35ppt? I have seen a few times latley where peoples slope was off using pure ro/di. Friends tank tested 1.025 using ro/di and he was having problems. Tested the refrac with 53mu and he was really at 1.031. Prob not your cause but always worth checking out. Also whats Mg at?

Hey Jason,
Something I have found is that every few months I need to tweek my flow due to blockage from coral growth. How is the flow? STN is usually IME caused by a lack of light or flow or both, but more often than not flow is the culprit.

I've been tweaking my flow quite a bit as of late. But I've actually been trying to 'soften' the flow around the tank.
I have 3 returns being fed from a Sequence hammerhead pump.
I have 2 of the returns on wavy Seas and 1 on normal lock line. I find the one on lock line does not blow directly on coral but across on a diagonal the entire length of the tank. I wavy seas actually blow on coral, but none that are having problems. I have introduced ball valves to the wavy seas to ensure they are not blowing too much water directly on the corals.

Just for more info. the entire force of the Hammerhead is not being returned through the 3 return lines. I have it also going to my Chiller and my 30G frag tank. I would say 4600gph is returning to the tank

what test kits are you using?

I use all Salifert Test kits and have even bought new to confirm.
I do also have some elos kits I have used as confirmation.

I have only once calibrated my refractometer Where would I get the correct calibration fluid?

my salifert test kits did me wrong, big time... i would send water out to be professionally sampled..


my elos kits came pretty close to what my actual samples are

I have inquirered with aquariumWatertesting.com with regards to Canadian orders and have heard nothing from them.

I've heard several others up hear have not heard back as well.

JasonMck, have you considered kH swing or the 8.8 kH? Your sig says you're running zeo, that kH is a little higher than I usually see recommended with zeo tank.

If you are running seachem reef salt 8.8 would be fine with zeovit. If not I agree drop it down to 7.5-8 dKH.

Yes I think ALK swings might be the cause.

Ok I consider myself an advance aquarist with a lot of success under my belt. But one thing that continues to elude me is the control of my CA Reactor. I'm either low in ALK or creeping higher and higher.
I currently have a PM 422 and I've added a dual stage that is about 6x12.
I currently have the effluent at a steady stream just past where you could differentiate drips. and the bubble count at about 2.5 bubbles/sec. I tend to adjust the bubble rate over the effluent but am open to any tips anyone could pass my way

Hey guys! Sorry to bother you, but what's STN? I've been racking my brain to figure it out, but am a little new to SPS. :)

Slow Tissue Necrosis. Basically it's tissue loss on SPS coral that doesn't happen all at once like RTN
