I second the 180 (72x24x24) especially if your debating between a 125 for lengh and a 120 for width......it would be the best of both worlds without being too big (240). I like the sounds of it soo much I might have to make that my next tank..............

NanoGurl 09/24/2007 10:32 PM

lol... i would probably just get the 240 if I spent all the money on the 180. The advantage to the 125 is I can use the equipment I already have and don't have to worry about heat/mold issues as much. If I jump to the 180, then all that comes into play so I might as well get the 240 :)

now theres some reef related material...

NanoGurl 09/26/2007 07:55 AM

Okay... so I was bored and surfing around on glasscages.com website and can get the 240g for about $1000 less through them. I've heard and read all the stories.

Do I sell out for $1000!?!?! LoL

GSMguy 09/26/2007 09:48 AM

do you care if you have 200g of salt water on your brand new floor?

NanoGurl 09/26/2007 10:43 AM

hehehe yea I do :/

GSMguy 09/26/2007 10:47 AM

when desigining this 240 i would put energy savings first this tank has the opportunity to be set up a long time, you guys are young and you will own the house its going in the tank could be set up for 20 years...

40-100 dollar savings a month for 20 years will really add up, in fact its a retirement fund.

sfilingeri 09/26/2007 12:14 PM

Just do what makes you happy, and dont listen to people here because they'll tell you to sell your first child for a bigger tank.

whats the big deal with glasscages.com? are they just horrible tanks or what? Are they prone to blow-out?

Also terrible CS, rude responses, don't need your business type attitude. I've only read one response so far where the tank failed and leaked... but several with chips, bad silicone, scratches and the like. I guess you roll the dice with them.

FUA 09/26/2007 06:48 PM

but they are probably cheap right.

NanoGurl 09/26/2007 06:53 PM

Yup. Probably a great choice for large sumps or a frag tank.

FUA 09/26/2007 06:59 PM

yeah, I checked out the website and it seems like they have a lot to sell. Maybe I will try them out and get a sump or something.

yep talk to guys like invincable569 and hahnmeister whos tank cost less than 60 bucks a month to run.

be willing to spend a lil more up front for stuff that uses less electricity and also for stuff that doesnt have expensive replacement parts.

IMO you could plan a tank that size for a long time and still miss stuff.

think about wattage and photoperiod when choosing lights a 400w electronic ballast will use less energy than a 400 hqi ballast. stuff like that. and the biggest energy savings can be had from your skimmers and return/closed loop pumps. and of course cooling thru evaporation instead of a large chiller.

some big beckett skimmers can run 200-400w constantly 24/7 some NW do the same job for 30-80w. those NW while more expensive initially will in the end save you money.

anyway, if i was thinking about a tank that size i would be thinking of it as a major investment and want to get the best return for the least amount of money over the long term.

Good luck im sure Ocean and Oreo will love a tank that size.

NanoGurl 09/26/2007 07:37 PM

Thanks for the info and suggestions! I don't know if I am going with that, I probably won't. But I was looking at other options when I saw the glasscages.com website.

I would run 250w for sure. I liked the Tunze nanostreams I had bc they used a lot less watts then maxi-jets and such. I wouldn't do a closedloop.

If my calculations were correct (big if) it would cost about $100 a month to run the tank with what I looked at, at .16 cents KW. That does not include salt, water, replacement bulbs etc, just electricity.

They do reptile shows a lot. Check to see if they will be in your area. If they are, you could just goto the show and buy one if they had it there. That way you don't have to pay the delivery fee.

They charge $100 to bring the tank to a show they were going to already with or without my order. Kinda irks me.

I also got my mandarin to eat pellets now. This made me really happy bc he was getting very skinny, but now he's filling out again. I don't understand it bc I can see a ton of pods inside my tank at night. Not sure why he's not eating them.
You could try taking some of the chaeto and shake it in the display (the pods should fall off) and it would spread them into the display so the mandarin could eat them.

SethSPST 09/27/2007 07:53 AM

Any significant changes or updates to the 75 or Nano?

vsnsofadrgn 09/27/2007 08:40 AM
