here is the situation.

i have two 55 gallon tanks. both were bought used from different people. i have ditched my overflow boxes and planned to drill each tank.

there are no markings on either tank about whether they are tempered or not.

would i be better off drilling the back glass pane on each tank? when they temper glass tanks, do they usually only temper the bottom pane?

It's normally only the bottom pane that is tempered. Drilling the back shouldn't be a problem.

will this work? if so, what should the drain pipe diameter be working against about 500gph return pump?

A lot of the 55 gallon tanks sold in those Aquarium starter kits (the ones that come with a filter and such) are tempered on the sides too. (At wallmart, etc)

I believe you can tell the difference between the two with a polarized lense.

i think the walmart tanks all have black trim. neither of these do, and they are fairly older (probably 5+ years) so i dont think they are from wal-mart

You could post some pics of the tanks themselves, it couldn't hurt.

I noticed you said "there are no markings on either tank about whether they are tempered or not". Are there ANY markings on either of these tanks what so ever?

i see no problems normally if its a good brand they will use thick enought glass on sides and use temp on bottom i would think their would be no problem as for your drawing you will get a mayjor about of toilet sound with that design unless you put barely any flow into there so i would thnk a hole near the tome and do a stand pipe like a large t and have some pipe go up with a cap will provide good allowance of flow and also no toilet sound!!!
