View Full Version : 10g sps nano

I hope everyone enjoys the rebirth of my 10g nano (I had one setup for the nanoreef contest however a falling powerhead killed several corals :( ). Here are some current specs:

Lighting
Modded 150watt Coralife hang-on HQI system w/ Ushio 14K bulb. The brackets that originally held the unit to the aquarium broke so I had to turn it into a hanging pendants.

Water movement
Seio 620

Liverock
10lbs Totoka liverock

Livesand
.5-1" sugar-grain sand

After the holidays I should be upgrading the seio to the new Tunze nanostream with a single controller 7091. I will also be adding a Tunze Nano Reefpack 200.

Here is a shot of the empty tank
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h217/chinchek787/LakeTahoe0906107.jpg

And with the seio mixing the water
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h217/chinchek787/LakeTahoe0906108.jpg

Now today with liverock and sand

Water evaporation will involve a fw drip system that I will be adding within the next few days. Once I add my sps frags it will double as a kalk drip. This weekend I am hoping to pick up some nice frags at the FRAG auction if the water tests well on friday. Everything was cycled before adding it to the 10g so I am hoping for either no or a mini cycle. Here is to wishing

BTW if anyone knows is the outer magnet on the Tunze saltwater safe? The reefpack is going to take up some room in the system so I was wondering if I couldn't just fix the nanostream to the side of the filter.

looks awesome cody! i think if you get the tunze nanostream though, that it will be just too much flow for a sand bed tank.

but anyhow, look forward to future pics, looking good so far.

As far as I know the nanostream is controllable (the 6025 box my lfs had said it was) so I am going to throttle it back some). So why replace my current pump if I am just going to throttle the other bacK? My biggest reason is that the nanostream is MUCH smaller than the seio, it comes with a magnet, and I enjoy buying new things :D Here are some pics from today, they are much clearer.

The 6025's are not controllable. Only the 6055's are.

im telling you, if you get a tunze nano 6025, say bye bye to the sand...

i had mine in a 10 gallon with about 7 gallons for a few days to break it in, and woah, it was a hurricane in there

Lol, thats why I was thinking about getting the 6055 instead so that I can throttle it back.

dude the 6055a
at its slowest is to fast and you will spend 275 dollars if you want more flow lose the sand before its too late
the 6055 is 1400 gph it would spray water out of your 10

crrichey
12/13/2006, 12:35 AM
I was not aware that it was 1400gph, silly me :D Well I am dead set on keeping the sand however the seio is too large (and to be honest isn't putting out much flow). I want to keep the clean look so does anyone have any recommendations on water movement?

Ok I picked up this birdsnest from the lfs I work at. It arived in poor condition however over the past month it really made a comeback so I bought it. Hopfully over the next month it will improve even more!

$260 bucks, and thank u and drummereef for the kind words :D I am still debating whether to do frags or small colonies. The frags would take longer to fill in however colonies do not grow as fast. It would be interesting to see at what point a frag's growth rate would increase its size to that of a wild or maricultured colony.

great start but from my homework being done and I too just started a driled 20 tall with a sump/fuge is to let the tank get mature before ading in the sps.....give it at least a 2-3 months but then again it's just my opinion.... i am doing amixed sps reef wtih zos and ricordas..

Good luck and great looking tank..

Nice tank, I really like your live rock. For water movement in my 10 gal I use 2 Mini jet 606s each rated at 167gph and an ac 70 with live rockrubble. one mini jet on either side and the ac70 right in the middle. I have very decent flow throughout the tank

cody, what lfs are you workin at? And where did you get that light from? I want new lights on my 40 but i dont want my 4x96 to go to waste lol.

But i'm with you...we dont need heaters in AZ :) My tank has stayed right at 80 since last march with the help of a fan. The colest its getting in my house right now is like 60's or so, and i doubt it will get a lot colder. If it does, i'll just leave my fan off for a while lol

Great lookin tank too. Do you have plans for fish? Or will it just be sps?

How long has this tank been set up?

About 3 weeks. I cured the liverock and sand in a seprate system and then moved it over to the 10g. After 2 weeks I didn't get a mini cycle so I started stocking. I absolutely HATE frags so a friend and I buy larger corals and then split them in half (that is why there are 2 m. danea pieces :D ). I am pretty sure that they will begin to brown in a couple weeks due to the lighting change however it has happened before and it doesn't take long before they regain their colors. The birdsnest is the only piece that was brown when I bought it.

Moving sand from a different system will often cause ammonia spikes. Even though it's not fun waiting for a system to become ready for sps, its very important for the longevity of the corals. Hope this system works out for you.

what are you doing to keep params in check? temp flux, calcium flux, alk flux, and salinity without shocking the sps in such a small system?

I've never heard of that before. The sand was actually dry, I didn't mean to lump it in the the liverock :D

The stylophora was $120 but like I said a friend and I split it so i used to be twice the size.

I do 1g waterchages every other day to keep up with calcium and alk. I'm also very diligent about topping off before the water levels goes down too far. I never add more than a cup of fw at any time. I have a large fan that blows across the aquarium that keeps it around 75F. At night I turn it off to prevent any additional cooling.

Yeah, it was like that when I bought it but I am hoping that it will get better. I didn't want it to die at the lfs.

Nice tank :) Interesting approach on maintaining cal/alk, daily WC's :eek2: I dont think I'd be able to do it. Have you thought about going to 2-part? Could be substantially easier/cheaper. Peace_

For me it is simpler to just mix up 5 gallons and change a gallon every other day. Not to mention it lowers nitrate.

Lagger
12/19/2006, 11:15 AM
Yeah, I totally looked past the no filtration part of the system. I guess you need some way to export nutrients.

Post some pics when that danae colors up! Thats a seriously big chunk(s) you have there :D

sir_dudeguy
12/19/2006, 11:59 AM
but there's live rock isnt there? That would be the filtration..imo you prolly dont need to do so many water changes unless you really are having a hard time keeping nitrates down...and if you are, then there is probably another problem.

The LR would be the bio-filtration for denitrification, however, I was referring to mechanical filtration. If he is feeding his tank, which he probably is, then you need some way to remove the waste, al la-->filters, skimmers or WC's.

But I agree, I think daily WC's are unneccesary. And you're right, if they are, the something is the issue.

I'm not doing DAILY wc, every other day. I suppose I could cut back more though.

sorry to bring this back up...but isnt that why we have clean up crews? I run no skimmer or filter (other than 50 lbs LR and tons of flow) in my 40 and theres no "waste" and other stuff that needs to be filtered out. The cleanup crew takes care of that
