View Full Version : nUgZ's 10g Frag
I switched everything from my 10 gallon reef over to this 10 gallon frag tank. The tank the reef was in had a leak for several months now and I got tired of monitoring the salinity so much. Here is a link to the original reef.

Here are a few pics of the tank with the light from the reef. These are under a Current Orbit 2x40 watt PC fixture. Great light.

I'm in the process of setting up a new system including a 33 cube I got at the PETCO sale. I got a good deal on a Coralife Aqualight with a 150 watt halide and 2x65 watt actinics. Great light. I'm very pleased. It came with two bulbs, the 10k that came with the fixture and a Hamilton 14k that has about two months left on it. The 10k is QUITE bright but the color is nice under the 14k. It's a good bit on the blue side I would say...almost as much as many 20k's I've seen. I'm going to use the 14k for a couple of months and then got to the 10k until it's done. The light will be on the 10 gallon until the 33 cube is ready. Here are some pics under the 14k.

nice frag collection! have you had any noticable growth under the PC's, also how are you taking care of the tank? water changes? feeding? etc....
Thanks JGross. I used the Orbit light for close to a year on the reef tank and I absolutely loved it. It's the best PC option there is for 10 gallon tanks. I had all kinds of growth for the most part. Several of the corals in the tank were rescued and not doing well so it took them longer to start growing like they should. I didn't add any SPS other than the Stylophora until the end of September. I had moderate growth from one ORA specimen and quite nice growth from a couple others. I'll post a couple pics. Here are the specs of the tank that I never posted.
10 gallon AGA
Coralife Aqualight Pro 24" 150 watt halide, 2x65 watt actinic PC
Visi-Therm Stealth 50 watt heater(this is the best heater ever)
AquaClear 110 HOB filter filled with LR/rubble and carbon
3 Maxi-Jet 400 powerheads on Natural Wavemaker
2 Coralife Digital Thermometers to compensate for the accuracy
I do a 30-40% water change once a week. I use Seachem Marine Buffer in my top-off water. I use Seachem Reef Builder every 3 days for Alk. I use Seachem Reef Complete everyday for Calcium except the days I use Reef Builder. I feed a couple NLS pellets throughout the day if I'm home. I feed cyclopeeze a couple times a week. I spot feed mysis and enriched brine to my LPS and Ricordia.
Thanks for looking.

the tank is really impressive, how do you know how much dose of each, you test often?
I use the same dosage everytime for each, but I do test everyday for Calcium and Alk before dosing to verify. I'll be going out of town for a few days soon so I hope everything will do OK without dosing. I'm a little unsure about my sister-in-law dosing for me.
Here's an actinic shot of the Acros when I first got them. The one on the left hasn't encrusted at all, the one on the right has encrusted very little.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b222/drnugz27/10%20Gallon/ActinicAcros.jpg
Here's a shot of the Acros about a week ago before adding the halide. The green on the left has encrusted a good deal and has started to sprout another branch on the left. The other to the far right has encrusted around the base but hasn't grown nearly as much as the others.

Louis- Thanks again. Going from DSLR to P&S would definitely take some practice. The camera I've got is great, but I can't wait for my DSLR. I'm saving for the Sony Alpha a-100 if I could quit buying things for my tanks. It is gonna give Canon and Nikon a run for their money.

how are you keep up the alk/cal levels?
are you dosing or just the massive WC weekly.
I use Seachem Reef Builder every 3 days for Alk. I use Seachem Reef Complete everyday for Calcium except the days I use Reef Builder. I will be switching soon to Randy's 2 part. I've been kind of skeptical about using the homemade 2 part, but if it's good enough for Randy it's good enough for me.

Those Lavender Zoas are pretty amazing!! Are you going to put all that back in you ten gallon or sell some of it?
Thanks Teddy. I do sell some of the stuff. Most of it ends up going locally. I'll be setting up a 10 gallon Zoanthid and Ricordia tank, plus I'm working on a system including a 33 cube and a 40 breeder frag tank.
kool..any pic of the your other tank?
There's a link at the beginning of this thread to my old 10 gallon reef. The new 10 doesn't have anything in it at this point other than sand and a little rock. The 33 and 40 won't be up for quite some time. I first need to build the stand and that's gonna be quite a challenge. The wife wants it to be L shaped and hold the 33, the 40 breeder, and the sump as well as all of the equipment/supplies. Like I said, that won't be up for a while.
It'll be quite a project. I don't think she realizes just how much work it'll take.

Awesome looking frags!
Question on that coralife fixture... is that the 15" wide one? I was looking at those online, but the seem like the would overhang a standard all-glass aquarium 15 or 20 gallon tank, which are only 12 inches wide.
Do the PCs hang over the edge, or does the fixture work well for a 12" wide tank?
Thanks manse. The fixture is 15" wide, so the actual fixture would be wider than the tank. The bulbs however are right at 11" from the outside edge of each. IMO it would work very well for a 12" deep tank.

Thanks nUgZ!
I'm looking at that fixture and the new Current 150w + 4x24 T5 one. They are both 15" wide, but I think the Current USA one has lights right to the outside edge.

Thanks a lot jellyous. No, I don't use a skimmer.
I transferred the sand from my old reef into the frag tank. Having the eggcrate on the bottom glass was trapping too much detritus and it had to go. Here are a couple updated shots. More to follow in the next few days hopefully. Thanks for looking.

When and why did you add sand (shell) to the tank floor? Still running skimmerler? I am hitting 85degrees in my 29g with just 144w PC lighting. I have a MJ1200 and some tiny little PH thats like 100gph plus my return pump thats 210gph so three small pumps and I cannot keep the temp down. How are you not hitting higher temps?
I added the sand at the beginning of March. I took out the bottom layer of eggcrate because it was trapping a LOT of detritus that I couldn't syphon out I had some sand from another tank that I was tearing down and figured some of my livestock would appreciate a sandbed to hang out in. I'm quite pleased with it actually. Most of my SPS have colored up more since the addition. It also gives the opportunity for more microfauna to reproduce. Yes I'm still not using a skimmer. Some days it would be nice to have one, but on such a small tank it would be obtrusive. Last night one of my Acan echinatas decided to eat one of my Favites. A skimmer would have helped in that situation. The tank is open-top and my ambient room temp rarely gets above 73. Those both play a large role in keeping the temps down. Your 29g is pretty much enclosed I assume..that would make your temp higher. Also, some kinds of powerheads heat up more than others. Maybe you could pick up some more efficient ones that could help.
Several months ago an Acan came into my LFS that I wanted but one of the employees bought it instead. He knew I wanted it so when his light and filter quit working he let me buy it. It needs a little TLC, but I really like it regardless. Here's what it looked like originally under the stores 20k halide.

Thanks a lot PSam. I do believe it is the True undata. Mmmmmm....nugz.
you see that purple edge and greenish hue? no, not the nugs. lol, anyway, that and those white polyps are giveaway. i have true undata lineage, one of my favorite, so unique. im almost sure thats what you have there. mine never shows crazy outstanding color, but super cool hues with those great polyps and crazy mounded shape. i love it.
edit - i just looked back at the pics, holy S man, look at that turnaround!
I got it at my LFS so I can't trace it all the way back, but it looks almost like the True undata and it keeps improving everyday. The difference between it now and when I first got the frag is unbelievable. It doesn't even look like the same coral.
no, it doesn't even look the same. you gave some tlc. lineage or not, thats a great coral you have there.

Anything...setup...parameters...additions...your main system...plans...etc.
You decide to change a bulb or move a frag because it is getting too little too much life we want to know about it! ;)
If you had Taco Bell before you frag a colony we want to know about it..:p
I guess I should update. The setup hasn't really changed. I am using a Hamilton 14k bulb temporarily untill I get the Phoenix 14k. I haven't been testing the tank like I should and my nitrates got high....very high. I looked around and saw that there was a 1/4" layer of detritus under the rock at the bottom of my Aquaclear. I doubt that helps keep nitrates down, so I emptied everything out of the filter and cleaned it thoroughly. I'll be doing another WC tomorrow and we'll see what happens. I snagged a couple new micros recently, and the Palythoa grandis are my new favorites. I'm in the process of clearing out some of the more common corals in favor of the harder to find. Watch for more pictures and updates to come. Thanks for looking.

A little bit of "dirty water" never hurt zoas..:) How regularly do you do water changes? I'm looking forward to seeing more! :)
The Zoanthids are fine, but some of my SPS were a little less thrilled. My ORA Tort browned out, but I'm sure it'll come back. I try to do a WC no less than once every two weeks. I need to do one a week since I don't use a skimmer.

nUgZ, this may not apply with your system because you keep alot of softies, but I plan on water changes every week.
I'm doing this for a myriad of reasons. It's much more manageable mixing small amounts of water at one time, and it's easier to store for the following week. Also, it keeps me on a schedule. Too often with my last system, which I didn't skim, I would become lax with water changes for 100 different excuses. Trying to do it all at once with larger changes can stress your animals. No more with this new system.
Finally, and more important for myself with a solo SPS system, I'm going to be replenishing elements weekly. I also plan to dose with each water change.
Man your Zoas and Blastos are nice!
Corndork- Thanks. If you do get that set up, post a link to your thread. I'd love to check it out.
ICF- I do have a good number of softies in here, but there are also just as many hard corals. Weekly WC's would be ideal and I'm making an effort to do so. I'm trying to move away from the less than amazing varieties of coral and focus on the cream of the crop. We'll see what happens. As far as your tank goes, I would recommend dosing opposite your WC's. When you do the WC it's kind of like dosing in itself. If I did my WC on Sunday then I would dose on Wednesday or Thursday. Thanks for looking!!
