Any top off that is reliable is good in maintaining water stability and as we all know, a nano is the toughest to maintain.
I have built in shelves/ledges throughout my home (it's a southwest thing  ) so I placed a 5gal Kent drip system above my tank and figured out the evaporation to be about a drop per 5 seconds.
I use a continuos Kalkwasser drip at that rate and the corals had never looked better.
any tips on how to figure out the evaporation rate?
for instance, From Thursday to Sunday, it required 2 gallons to fill it back up to top.

It's a long formula, but the easiest way is through trial and error, just be around while trying in case you have the "error".
I'd start (if using a drip method) with a drop every 8sec and adjust it from there.
If you're using an automated float switch, set it and forget it.
