I was cleaning out a wetdry that i use once in a while to run carbon, but this time i left it on for longer than usual. I opened it up and saw small whiteish ?"egg sacks"? i dont know what they are. So i cleaned it and though nothing of it. About 2 weeks later i am starting to notice them in my main tank. They are about 1/4 inch long and are in the shape of an oval. They attach themselves to whatever they can. They are growing all over. I am trying to get a pic but i figured id post this first to see if this is a common place thing.

Thanks in Advance.

Talking about these? I have them too, if so, and don't know what they are. (Yes, I have a hair algae problem!)

That is exactlly what they look like. Some are bigger and dont have much shape to them but the one that is in the upper right corner is what most of them look like. Thanks alot of the pic reefspy.

Your pic didnt show ;)

My guess is that they are small fan worm larvae. Since I have seen these for a LONG time I have not guessed they were a problem. ;)

those are commonly called q-tips, if you touch the tips of them you will get fiberglass (hairlike) like needles stuck to you, if you do get them in your skin they can be a bother . you can use a rag dragged across your skin to pull them out. they are completely harmless

Another question about Q-tips. Do they change after a certain time? I had one that was very large and then one day it was no longer. Didn't really think anything of it, but now I am curious. Now I have hoards of little ones. Not a pest...yet.

They are commenly found in low lighted areas and are a filter feeder.I have always been told they are a good sign.

Don't worry, be happy. They are good guys. Little sponges.

yes they tend to hang out in low light areas, especially in the sump. some people say they are a good sign? personally i don't know??? people say a lot of things????????? like coraline is a good sign in the tank????? what i think if they don't bother or harm anything then they could stay in the tank.

looper121,
as for your question about them diappearing? yes from what i see in my tank once they get big enough they pop, and in my opinion that's how they reproduce (spread in the tank).

but like i said those little hairlike needles on the tips really irratate my skin.

Try some Oil of Olay for that irritation :)
