I'm upgrading my 29gallon tank to a 40 gallon breeder(36" long x 18" deep x 16" high). My current lights are the 30" Current-USA Orbit Power Compact lights which have (1) 65 Watt 10000K White/6700K White PC bulb and (1) 65 Watt Actinic 03/7100K Blue PC bulb.

I was wondering if I could use these existing lights on my 40 gallon breeder, even though the new tank will be 36" instead of 30". I was planning on hanging them from the ceiling.

I only intend on keeping LPS and some softies. Will my old lighting setup be adequate enough?

Otherwise I was looking at getting this 36" 156 watt (4-39 watt bulbs) Nova Extreme T-5 HO unit which is on sale at Dr Fosters & Smith for $189

I am a complete noobie when it comes to lighting, so I appreciate the help.

As long as the light is hanging close enough, and the light dependent corals near the top of the tank close to the light, I don't see why your light fixture wouldn't do.

Seeing while you already have the fixture use it for now then upgrade later if it doesn't do the trick.

You might find a good deal if you wait and upgrade down the road.

Funny that only a person from my own local reef club chimes in to help! Thanks Bri Guy!!!

I just figured I should buy the T-5's since they were $60 cheaper than usual. I wasn't sure if T-5's were overkill or not.

I hope a few more people can chime in on this too

I don't see a need to upgrade with what you are looking to keep.
