View Full Version : How to "grind" acrylic at a certain spot from 1" to 3/4" for magnet holder?

My tank has 1" thick acrylic, and I would like to put 4x Tunze Nano Stream 6045's into it. Problem is the magnets are only rated for 3/4" thick acrylic.

Do you think it's safe to basically grind circular spots down where the magnetic holders are going to be placed about 1/4"?

Also what kind of tool do I need? I was thinking hole saw, but I'm not going all the way through, so there'd just be a ring. I'm guessing I have to grind it down somehow.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!!

You may want to move the magnets at some point. I would NOT grind a nice one inch tank. I would get stronger magnets and make my own.
Dip these in plasti cote and your good to go.

You could also dip them in epoxy.
here is a link to plastic dip.

Also, you can probably use the power head side of the magnent and just buy a stronger half for the exterior.

i have no experience with magnets, but how would I figure out what size / strength I would need to hold it in place? just guess and check?

a router would probably work, but like kinetic said, you might want to move the magnets at some point, id just get stronger magnets, JMO

thats a good question. I would call them and ask. But if you can use the inside half of the tunze magnent you wont have to reef proof it. Make shure you put a towl benith the new magnet incase you cant get it off.

If you cant get the magnet off through 1" acrylic.. you purchased a HUGE magnet.

If you can determine the aproximate diameter of the outside magnets, you can buy a few more and stack them. It will increase the pull on the inside magnets.

Why would you want to tamper with a perfectly solid tank? You can very well compromise the integrity of the tank.

What is the cost of the magnet and what is the cost of your tank?

I second the stronger magnet.

I wonder how big your tank is if its made with 1" acrylic?? I would guess its pretty good size....so why are you buying nano-streams???

Thats exactly my question. Hes got a 32g listed, but theres no way you'd make a 32g out of 1".

it's a 68 gallon tank I'm setting up. It's braceless/rimless and to avoid any chance of bowing and damage I made it 1". I was also contemplating a cold water tank option as well, with the 1" it wouldn't condense as easily.

regardless of that, anybody know the final diameter of the magnet mounts? I'll try to buy a handful of strong magnets the same diameter to see what will hold.

Any suggestions to which magnet would be great! (I've seen the websites, but any experience with which ones may be strong enough would be fantastic).

I would realy call one of the places and see what they say. I dont know the formual for "pull" when you have a 1" space between them. IF not, buy the biggest ones and put a t shirt or a towl between the magnet and the glass so you can pull it off if its to strong.
