i believe coral banded will eat nip at some coral and other tankmates... double check it

I can say from personal experience that the sexy will most likely become a snack for the coral banded. I would skip the coral banded and get one or a few sexy shrimp with a peppermint, fire, or cleaner shrimp.

I would think that the CB would be a bit crowded in a 12g with rock. The CB that I have in my 75g is HUGE.

I'm starting up my 12 gal reef tank, and currently have a skunk cleaner shrimp, and 2 peppermint shrimp. They definitely are doing the job, with the help of 6 margarita snails.

Banded coral shrimp are pretty but they end up ruling the tank. I have a full-sized reef tank and my banded caught and ate a skunk cleaner. I've also seen him trying to catch fish.

A group of sexy shrimp in that size tank are great. Just be careful with the other inhabitatnts. They can be expensive snacks. I have four in my 10 gallon Gobie tank and will probably add a few more.

I would aviod the peppermints or coral banded.....bandeds antennae whack everything when they get bigger and are agressive. The peppermint are notorious for preying on softies that are under stress. The sexy are awesome little reef shrimp.

Well i got a pepper mint shrimp today from my lfs along with 2 blue leg hermits,2 nassarius snails, and a turbo snail.Im thinkin of gettin 1 or 2 sexy shrimp. My LFS doesnt sell it though.Where should i look for one?he had the cb for 20$ little to expensive?Pepper mint was for 10 so i said heck ill take it.The best part is!He has a rock with at LEAST 7+ yuma ricordea polys for only 60.00$.I only got to count 7 and there were still more. its crazy. Will the pepper mint bother any of my trumpets, zoas or anenomes?

Ive seen them attack stressed softies like rics, anemones, and shrooms frequntly. Sometimes they cause no problems but I personally dont consider them very softy frinedly.

You hopefully should be okay if your specimens are friendly. I have a sexy + cleaner shrimp gettin along in my 12g. I got the sexy from liveaquaria- i stuck him in on an order that i sent in for a coral so i could get an extra goodie for shipping. He's truely a cool little guy.

I am wondering if it would be too much on my bioload to get a few more- will the sexy shrimps hang out together?

I have a 12 gallon. After reading this thread I think I am going to buy up some sexy shrimp and fire shrimp.

Saltwaterfish.com has the fire shrimp in stock.

Anyone know a place that has them both in stock???

They are on strict feeding habits though no? Only Star fish if I remember correctly. Or can they be fed other stuff and kept happy?

Correct they only eat Starfish.

I find them beautiful but I just found out last night about the eating habits...way to much for me. I don't think I could cut off a leg and use it for food, and just put the starfish back somewherre safe. I have my limits.

I have a pair so what I do is just put the whole starfish in the tank and they jump on him right away. I probably couldn't cut it up either. :D

Do you breed the starfish? Curious to know how much a typical star costs, and how much they need to eat? Is it a few dollars a day, or a few dollars a month? trying to understand how people support these guys.

11/14/2006, 01:59 PM
No I dont breed starfish. I just get them from the LFS. They normally run about 5-7 dollars depending on the store and the size. I feed my starfish about every 2-2 1/2 weeks. Whenever I see them out hunting I know that it's time to get them a starfish. Once I put one in the tank I usually will see them for a few days and once they subdue the starfish I wont see them for about two weeks. You kinda feel bad for the starfish but hey it's nature.

Interesting. I guess it can be an ideal shrimp to have if they grow at that rate.

I've read about people keeping them in a quarantine tank and pulling a leg at a time, and then letting it regrow a new one. That makes sense but it seems like a lot of efforts overall. Maybe in the far future.

Got any pics of your shrimp in your tank setting? I hardly ever see any pics of them other than the close up from the web stores.

I believe youve misread the post....It states that the CB shrimp was the aggressor (as they usually are) and IT attempted to kill, maime, and thoroughly destroy its tankmates....;)
