View Full Version : Attaching acrylic to glass?

I need to attach a couple of overflows I made out of acrylic to the sides of my glass tank. I tried using super glue gel and it felt pretty secure, but after doing a flow test a couple of days ago, today I found the overflows floating in the tank.

Anyone have any idea how to attach the overflows to the tank? Anyone have success doing this?

Let me know.

Thanks,
Rick

Just silicon them in. It'll be plenty strong enough.

I had them attached with superglue gel, then the next day put silicone around the edges on the inside of the overflow. If I just use silicone, would I put it on the outside? Or could it be that I didn't get the glass clean enough before applying the superglue and silicone?

clean the glass, put the silicon on the edge of the acrylic, and then press into place. Its important that the silicon is between the acrylic and the glass: Thats where the strength of the bond comes from.

Should I avoid alcohol? That is what I would normally use outside of this hobby.

no, there's no problem with using alcohol. that's what i use personally. also, make sure you don't press the overflow so hard to the glass that there's almost no silicone left. i'd leave about 1/16-1/8" of silicone between the acrylic and the glass. after that settles, put a bead of silicone all the way around the box on the inside and outside, just like the corners of a glass aquarium. there was a guy awhile back that did some tests to see what was the strongest bond between glass and acrylic and Weld-on 40 was the best. much better than silicone.

CPT. i've never seen the acrylic weld-ons at either. check the yellow pages for plastics suppliers. or get it from here http://www.usplastic.com/catalog/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=usplastic&category%5Fname=25394&product%5Fid=2273 it's not the weld-on brand, but it's the same chemical.

If the silicon is done correctly, you'll break the tank before the overflow comes off (personal experience).

Weldon 40 is like $50.

I have been to every Home Depot and Lowes within 50 miles radius from me. I have never seen it there. Trust me, they both don’t carry it.

Here is a place for Weld-On and all the things you will need to apply weld-on:

Depends how strong do you need them to bond? But in general, yes, you can use silicone.
