Right now I have a 29 gallon reef that i want to upgrade my lighting on so I can keep sps and clams. I was interested in Metal halide and was thinking of having a 150 watt HQI reefstar pendant hanging over the tank. They also sell a 250 watt pendant. I am concerned that a 250 watt HQI might overheat the tank. Will the 150 work for sps and clams? Also I have a total of 40 gallons of water because of my 10 gallon sump underneath. Somewhere I read that a sump can lower the tank temperature 1 to 2 degrees. So which should I get?

250. Just be sure you have plenty of ventilation/fans. I keep mine about 8" off the surface of the water on my 30 cube.
