Looking to add a glass external overflow to a glass tank.
Should I paint the back of the tank before siliconing the overflow on or silicone and then paint.

Any thoughts/suggestions?

Without question silicone first.

Silicone first definitely...it needs to be adhered to the glass

Definitely silicone first.....I just tried it to see what would happen on the inside of my canopy to hold a small cover piece, and while it stuck, it was not very secure and would come undone shortly.....especially with any weight or pressure on it.

Are you painting the inside of the overflow box?

I would if someone tells me its ok with the Krylon fusion.

If that isnt ok, I was going to get a peice of black acrylic to slide into the overflow to cover that part of the back wall.

I'd go with the acrylic. The paint isn't meant to be submerged an will eventually fail.

Like said, the paint would'nt be safe.
As far as the black plexi goes, it's the safest idea, but if you put it inside the external overflow, you'd still be able to see the silicone used to attatch the box to the back glass from the inside. The best methode would be to put the black acrylic on the inside of the tank itself. Does this make sence?

Glad to help. BTW, got any pics? What did you use to cut the tank? What size tank. I'm doing something similar on my 125g. You can check my progress by clicking on my lil red house, but everythings on hold due to a knee injory.
