My live sand is now dead!
My tank had a leak and I moved everything in my tank. Everything seemed to be fine.
I put my sand in a bucket covered it with water and a powerhead but the sand is black now and smells aweful. Im pretty sure the bacteria died. Should I just throw it out or can I regrow it???

Not worth it. I see big problems down the road.

I don't think you should toss it.
Even though the critters are dead, you can still use the sand. I will just take a while for it to come back to life. Cycle it in an empty QT tank or something.

And rinse it out, too.

Always toss the sand, it's not too expensive to replace and much cheaper than killing your present livestock.

Being that it's a quick move due to a cracked tank, why would you want to place something back into an established biosystem that will take you back to square one and the initial cycle?

Replace it with dry sand and get a few cups (LS) from another hobbyist to help seed the new bed.
