Stand construction questions

I have never built a stand before. I need some advice from the experienced wood worker here.

What's the best way to attach the vertical supports (2x4's) to the top and bottom frames?
1. Screw vertically through the frame member into the vertical support. This would require a pretty long screw though.
2. Screw diagonally from the vertical support into the frame member
3. Use some kind of metal bracket

If you do option 2 get a pocket hole kit, Kreg makes them. and use glue. Thats what I did, however I also used maple for my frame. you can see some pics by clicking on my little red house. You can also noch out half of each peice of wood where they connect then screw them straight through.
