Skimmer ratios?

Is there any ratio for body to neck dia. for skimmers?

I am going to make a skimmer w/ a 4" body and a 2" neck. Does this sound OK?

The skimmer will be about 30" tall if that helps.

Also, is their any ratios for neck height, is longer or shorter better?

The 2'' neck is fine. The shorter the neck the better. I have a 12'' neck on my DIY and it works great so it could go either way.

how much air are you planning on putting through it? Thats what decides neck size.


2" is awfully small... my skimmer for my 58 has a 3.5" neck, and I wish it was like 5". (octopus NW200 running 25-28scfh)

I am thinking about using a Maxijet 1200 w/ an air injection kit. I would like to use this pump for making the bubbles only and another pump to determine the GPH of the skimmer, it seams this is a good design.
