I am going to build a sump for a friends new 220 tank. He bought a new 75 Gallon tank to use as a sump.

I would like some advice on the design. When I built my 30 long sump I had some help with the design and it turned out great. I'm thinking that this sump is so large that I could go for more then the standard setup.

Here is a picture of my 30 long sump:

Does anyone have links to any 75 gallon sumps? Or design ideas for a large sump? I was thinking about building some of the duplexium concept into this sump.

Any advice would be appreciated!

This is what I've started with. Pretty much the same as my 30 gallon sump, only larger.

Any advice? I would like to make the most out of this sump.

Thanks!

What is the purpose for the 4th baffle from left to right? I am also planning diy sump.

Thanks

That keeps the macro from going into the return chamber.

This is a picture with half the refuge a duplexium. The white area represents the light diffuser that is used to build the Benthic zone. This area would be covered in LR rubble to prevent much light from getting into that zone.

If you haven't seen the duplexium video it is here: http://www.reefvideos.com/ It is the second video on the top row.

Any thoughts?

Looks good. Just remember to calculate in the water siphoning back into the sump if the power goes off. Siphon breaks of course, but just be sure you have plenty of extra space so the sump doesn't flood.

Does anyone have a duplexium up and running? If so how do you like it? Is anything growing in there?

i'm curious on how to control the level of water in the sump itself, and to know how much room you would need in case of a poweroutage, or if it breaks the siphon.

mpd525: In my diagram the third and fifth baffles control the level of water in the refuge area of the sump. The first baffle controls the level in the first chamber. The return chamber will show all evaporation and is controlled by the amount of water in the system.

If there is a power outage water will siphon back into the sump through the return plumbing. I drill two holes in the return plumbing just below the surface of the water, this way the siphon is broken fairly quickly. My 75 drains less then five gallons. I am planning on 10 gallons for the 220 as long as the holes are drilled less the one inch below the waters surface.

There are 231 cubic inches in a gallon. The tank is 72x24x30. So take the length and width and one inch of depth and multiply to get cubic inches of water siphoned.

72x24x1=1728 cubic inches
1728/231=7.5 gallons

So if I drill the siphon break holes less then one inch below the waters surface it will not siphon more then 7.5 gallons. In a 75 gallon sump that isn't much. I was planning on having extra room in the sump for about 15 gallons.
