i want to build a sump for a 29 gallon tank. any suggestions would be great. i am kind of curious what supplies i will need and an approximate cost to build it. i don't have a skimmer yet, but when and if i get one, i would like to have a way to put it on the sump without rebuilding it. i would also like to run a closed loop on the setup. thanks.

No drilling ... meaning you don't want to drill the display?

You'll need to use an HOB siphon overflow. Lifereef makes a nice cheap one.

What kind of skimmer? HOB or Sump style? I built a sump to have a place for an HOB skimmer on my 55 gallon setup.

right i don't want to drill it because it's already stocked, so i will either have to buy or build an overflow. i'm probably going to build it to where it has a HOB skimmer. I'm just curious about what all needs to go in the sump. i'm going to try to build an closed loop so i can get rid of the powerheads.

In the sump most people place the skimmer, a refugium, and the return pump. You may or may not have bubble traps depending on your sump design.

One of the nice things about placing the skimmer in the sump is the noise it makes gets baffled by the stand enclosure.

When I had a 29 setup I used a 10 gal(only tank that would fit under stand) as a sump and I made my own overflow box. You can use a 10, 20h or maybe a 20L if it will fit. I made the overflow box from 2 lee's specimin containers connected back to back (about $5-$7 each). I bought a siphon u-tube on ebay ($7.25 shipped). You drill the inner box to the water line you want in the display. The outer box you drill the bottom for the drain to the sump and drill holes in the pvc above the bottom of the U-tube to keep the siphon in the event of a power outage.(I used 1" pvc).

The only bad thing about this is the look of the box in the tank and you have to watch the siphon for air bubbles. But without drilling its easy and cheap.

her are some old pics

This one is a full tank shot you can see the inner box up to the left
