View Full Version : Is it possible to modify a Hang-on-Tank skimmers into a skimmer/overflow box?

I’m trying to figure out a way to add a protein skimmer to my 55 Gal reef tank. My main problem is my tank acts as a room separator so it is visible from 3 sides, (both 48-inch sides are both visible). Therefore, I only have one 12-inch side to hang an overflow box. I have a sump but I do not have enough height where the sump is to add a protein skimmer. My latest thought is to purchase a Bak-Pak 2R, a Remora, or some other Hang-on-Tank Skimmer, then add a bulkhead to the side with out the skimmer. My current overflow box has a 1-inch bulkhead. Then, I have an Eheim pump returning the water to my surger at about 400 gph.

Is this reasonable? Does the Bak-Pak have enough flow for my sump/surger? Does anyone have some other possibilities of what I can do to add a protein skimmer to my setup?

Exactly how much room do you have under the tank?
