I know I've got to pony up and get a good regulator for my Ca reactor, but I gotta believe there's a cheap place to get a CO2 tank.

Anyone know a good place to pick one up?

Thanks

Are there any special adaptors or certain type of top the tank needs for a Ca reactor regulator? Threaded? Special Valve?

What do they cost, roughly?

Thanks

You can get a filled 5lb bottle at northeast tech. in Ithaca for around $18.00 all u have to do is screw on ur regulator and turn it on....(don't forget the washer)

Depending on how much CO2 you will be using, you can also use a tank for a paintball gun from a sporting goods store. Small, but you usually don't need a huge tank and it will last quite a while.

CO2 regulator and bubble counter costs roughly $100.
It costs me $11 to fill a 5lb. CO2 bottle.
The tank itself is an extra expense if you don't have one.

I have seen sutiable regulartors for as low as 40. and a simple bubble counter can be made for realtively cheaply. The only thing I am haveing trouble finding is a good needle valve.

How much CO2 do I need. I've got a GEO 6x24.

Do most regulators come with the proper washers?

Oh, and that reactor comes with a bubble counter. Do i still need one on the regulator?

Thanks

Congrats on getting the GEO. You'll only need one bubble counter. How much CO2 you need all depends on how fast you run the reactor (to keep up with the demand for Ca/alk) and how long you want to go between CO2 tank refills. I use a 5 lb. CO2 tank and it lasts many months before needing refilling. I like smaller CO2 cylinders because they are easy to transport to the welding suppy store- the larger one can be a real PITA to move around and cost more to refill in a single shot. Additionally, if you get a bad seal on a big CO2 tank you stand the chance of loosing a lot of CO2.
Most regulators come with proper nylon washers.
There is debate whether or not to use teflon tape on the threads where you tighten the regulator.

Awesome. It's great to know I've got back up. Even though most of you are indirectly responsible for me getting a bigger tank.

I have to asign blame so that my fiancee and my accountant won't look at me so funny.

Oh I forgot. Zanclus, what media do you run in your geo?

I am running Gen-X Calcium reactor media in my reactor. It is broken up skeletons, I used ARM media but found it to get "chalky" over time. I like the way this media desolves. seems to work well for me so far.... I bought it from Premium Aquatics:

Just a little info. If anyone chooses to use the paintball type tank or would like more info on them. The larger tanks are 20 oz tanks, and can be exchanged at Walmarts for brand new FILLED tanks for around $8. Comes in handy if you have a tank that is comming up on a hydro date.
