I bought a brain coral today and the LFS told me to put it on a ledge but I have read they like to be placed on the substrate. Opinions would be appreciated!

most common place for a brain is the sand

If it's an open Brain, then it's generally best to put in on the substrate like these guys said. That's cause the Brain's tissue is very fragile and could easily rip on a rock or another sharp object you might place her on. That allows a disease ( of which I can't remember the name ) to set it and slowly kill her.

Ok I have another question. There isn't a lot of space on the bottom of my tank. If there isn't enough space for the brain to grow will it just stay the same size or will it die?

It will (somewhat slowly) grow, and either sting other corals, or be stung by other corals.

Brain corals are very slow growers. I wouldn't bother much about the space it has, but more about its neighbors.

I know they have stingers, is 6 inches away from other corals ok?
