Should I use Plenum?

I've been reading a lot of materials regarding the plenum system and sand bed stuff.

I am about to put the sand into my tank and I am not sure if I should use a plenum.

As I understand. the plenum will allow the water to sift through creating a low oxygen layer in the sandbed.and creating denitrification zone.

However, If I am not using the plenum, there will be no water movement down into the deeper zone of the sand bed, how will the nitrite be delivered down to the anarobic zone for denitrification?
