nope, I don't think its an engineer goby, ( although it acts like an engineer goby, hiding, digging in the sand, taking mouthfuls of sand and spitting it out beyond his cave but he looks very different than the ones I've seen on various reef web pages.......but.....are there salt-water salamanders????

I agree that it is some kind of goby.

bstricklin and pufferpunk were right.....it is an ADULT engineer goby, sometimes known as a convict blenny......they do grow to around a foot, and the coloration is similar to the one I have. Reef safe, eats just about anything. Thanks. I finally did find him on the net when I looked up the latin name for him. Goes to show I shoulda taken latin in H.S.

Be careful, gobies will eat any fish/shrimp it can fit in it's mouth & at a foot, it's gonna have a really BIG mouth! I had a Dusky jawfish that ate over $100 worth of fish. He was only about 4" long.

I'm pretty sure there aren't any salt water salamanders.
