I am looking for a skimmer to put in the sump of my 55 gal tank.

Can you guys give me suggestions on what types to look for? Brands? Capacity? Types of pumps that I should look for.... needle, venturi, ect.?

I do not want to spend over two hundred... preferrably less. $150 is my target price, but can I even get a decent skimmer for that?

I have the coralife superskimmer 125 on my 60 gallon tank. This is a great skimmer for the price and I am pleased with its performance. Right now drsfoster&smith have it on sale for $114.99. That is a great deal for this skimmer. I remember paying a bit more for mine. Anyways, check it out and see what you think.

P.S. Whatever else you do stay away from the seaclone skimmers. They are complete garbage.

The guy at my LFS sold me on the ever so awesome prizm.

As you may have read they are kind of the junk. Mine does work and seems to do a "decent" job. But also requires me to tweek it a couple times a week.

so...um... yeah... don't buy a prizm.

+1 for the coralife super skimmer...i got the 65 on my 46 gal bowfront and man that thing works like a charm. takes a day to break in but man the results are amazing, and its VERY QUIET. I just installed it last weekend so I'm still messing with it, only confusing part is how to empty the waist container without completely shutting off the skimmer. But again its a very good skimmer and I paid $80 shipped on Ebay.

pony_killer,

In order to empty the colllection cup, it is necessary to shut down the skimmer first. It is easy removal of skimmate though. Just unscrew the red ring and lift off. Clean the collection cup and replace it back on the skimmer. Just make sure that you keep track of the O-ring. It sometimes stays attached to the colllection cup when you remove it from the skimmer.
