are the baffles necessary in a sump? I'm upgrading my tank to a 125g and I have a 55 acrylic tank that fits perfectly underneath and I would like to have it as sump/refugium. I was thinking in using dividers like thishttp://www.petsolutions.com/default.aspx?ItemId=10810600&EID=SZ10810600&SID=SHZIL to prevent the macroalgae from going into the return pump. What do you think?

That would in effect become your baffle.

Most of the time baffles are used to get rid of bubbles. If that is not a problem for you then it should work.

they would have to be secured to the tank enough to force the water to go over, under, and back over them. an effective baffle system uses several dividers (usually 3) in alternating heights, to force water through them. if you just stick a divider in your tank it may not work as a bubble trap.

I don't want the divider to trap bubbles, I just want it to keep the macro algae away from the pump

ah, then it might work. ive never used one of those dividers so im not sure how they're secure. but, it wont take much to keep the macro away.

does any one have sumps without baffles?
