I am looking for suggestions to improve the water movement in my 42 gallon tank. The tank is extra tall measuring 30" long x 12" wide x 30" deep.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

What do you have for circulation in it now?
If you are gong to have fish only you only need enough flow to keep the food and fish pooh from settling on the bottom of the tank. Ideally you will have a good skimmer for the tank. By keeping the bad stuff in the water column you will enable the skimmer to get it out of the tank.

I would think that if you have 1 Seio 820 or an 1100 that would do the trick. If you have a sump you need to inlcude the flow from the sump as well.

Usually you would shoot at 10 to 15 times tank volume for minimum turnover.

I hope this helps.

Pat

Seois are good options, Their is also a mod for Maxijets now a days that really makes them rock. you can look into a closed loop also.

I don't know if it's new or not and maybe someone can chime in with a link or a name...but there's this locline attachement that narrows the water flow before bursting it out to give a wider range of current. One of my LFSs uses only a mag 24 and four of these locline attachments on his 240 display and nothing else for water movement. Everything is moving. I don't need anymore power heads in my tank now either. :D

SuperNerd,
Are you talking about Penductors? Those are supposed to really boost the output.

Yes, yes I think I just may be. :lmao: Typing that on the internet did bring up some pics of things that definitely look like what I was talking about.

Here is a link with a tank showing just a single..."penductor" working on the left side of the tank. Right side is just regular locline I believe: http://www.weatherson.com/photos/455_single_penductor.jpg

By the way about the bubbles in the pic...easily controllable. :D

looks like an eductor?

An eductor creates a venturi when water is pumped through it. The venturi creates suction which can pull in additonal water into the stream. An eductor can also be used to pull in and mix air, chemicals, etc. I use one on my lawn sprinkler system to pull in and mix a liquid fertilizer for the grass.

They are also great replacements for expensive vacuum pumps.
