How big does a quarantine tank need to be.
And if i keep sponges in main tank will that
remove the need to cycle the quarantine tank.

I've seen some quarantine tanks as small as 10g. Some people keep sponges in the sumps of their main tanks to keep from having to re-cycle the QT.

I read around 20% of the display volume, but that quickly becomes limiting with larger tanks... or such a size that it doesn't stress the fish further.

I have a 55g qt. Its a bit large but I don't plan on using it forever as qt.

Why take the tank down after your done treating, the tank isnt diseased. I do several large water changes and run carbon to get rid of meds if any in the water.

My qt has been running for 5 months now and is now on its 3rd batch of fish. When I first set up the qt it was very unstable and I like the stability of the long running qt.

I like a 20 for QT
Keeps meds down
Unless you have a big fish a 20 will usually do

A 55 like mine will take a lot more salt, water, and meds. I agree with the 20 or 30 if you like larger fish.

Well...I just found the article by Steven Pro about quarantine tanks in RK Magazine. That search function is great.
