Anyone ever heard of a gold rim tang eating coraline off of rocks instead of eating the sea weed that it is feed?

are you sure its eating it? I cant imagine there is anything nutritional or even edible in coralline or other very calcareous algae. This is why so little eats halimeda. It may be inadvertantly breaking off coralline as it "pecks" at the rock.

Well, that could ver well be, but I have noticed a lot of my thick coralline has started to get little white spots of the rock under it showing through. I was wondering if there is something that I can do about this, or if it is just a hazard of having tangs? Thanks in advance.

Coralline and calcareous algae is often included in many Acanthurus sp. diets--just in lesser amounts.

maybe you should try to increase the amount of food available to your tang.
