Linguistic differences are fascinating! I've been catching the regional tics out here- one is that people seem to put a "w" in everything- as in, "I 'dunno abwout dat." They also use the term "but" and "yeah, right," very differently here: "But," (pronounced "bwut,") is used to puncuate silence, like "'yep" or "'huh" is back in Illinois and Indiana.

The oddest one so far is "yeah, right." Hoosiers and Illinoians might use it to to question someone's veracity, or emphasize a point, as in "yeah, right, the Cubs will ever win a Series."

Here, amazingly, it's used to affirm humor, or irony, as in saying something somebody finds funny, and the listener will respond with a very quick "yeah, right?" with an up-tic on the "right."

Imagine being an Indiana/Illinois person (we sound kind of like the folks on "Hee Haw;" I do, anyway) being surrounded by people who sound like Archie and Edith Bunker.

I thought everyone here would sound like Cliff from "Cheers" or the people on "This Old House," but that's totally different, and up in Boston, it seems. The "Pepperidge Farms Remembers" accent seems relegated to old-timers in Maine.

Fascinating!

And the vocabulary is different, too. You should have seen the look on my face when I tried to ship a package at the package store!

At least I didn't leave empty-handed.

I moved from MI to OH and the differences are surprising. People in Ohio leave out "to be".

They say, "The car's tire needs inflated."
and "My shirt needs ironed".

Weird.

My mother and grandmother were an interesting mix. They would red the table, pack my father's lunch in a poke, and sit on the davenport. You crossed the bridge over the crick (creek) on the way to my grandmother's house. There were others too -- but I can't remember them now.

Some More:

Orange:
We have an AREange and others have a OARange.
Coffee:
COUGHffee or caaffee
Dog:
DAWg or DAg

Tennis Shoe or Sneaker?
Hoggie, hero, sub or grinder?

Do you you do wash, warsh or laundry?

Pittsburgh is the only place I know that uses Gumbands instead of rubberbands, and they may use them DonTon. It would be interesting to be at a wild karaoke night when the song "Downtown" comes on.

Ohio has drive through liquor stores. What, no time to go into the bar to get a DUI?

I bought stuff in Iowa and they asked me if I wanted a sack. I wondered if getting drunk there would get me half in the sack instead of half in the bag.

In NJ a Sloppy Joe just might be a triple decker sandwich with ham, turkey or roast beef & cheese with cole slaw & russian dressing or it could be ground meat (or as some here call it Chopped Meat) on a bun with sauce.

I went to a Knicks game & a guy with a tray full of beers trying to sell them was saying "Beeeeerah Heeeerah" and another guy doing the same thing was yelling "Buhh Huhh"

The fine state of Illinois also sports drive-thru liquor stores. In Dekalb, home of Northern Il Univerity, no less.

Yet, they are crazy out there about checking for DUIs. Road blocks and random checks all the time... Obviously some sort of a concpiracy.

Please park your car in the yard.

The Bostonian,"Please pahk yah cah in the yahd."

The New Yorker,

But when I was in London I couldn't open my mouth without being asked what state I was from and I would say Oregon, and they would say "Where?"

Being on the subway (tube) in london was so awesome with all the people around me talking in that accent, I almost started laughing!!!!
