This thing was attach to this dead goniopora at the LFS, it's growing very fast, from undetectable to this size (about 4 inch) in a month or two. If you touch it, it do not retract, so I think is not a mushroom, so my only guess is this is some kind of algae.

Do you know what it can be?

Thanks,
Eduardo

Great Question. I would be just as interested to know what that is as well.

If it is soft to the touch like a rose peddle it is a type of alge, i have the same alge on a small rock i keep it trimmed back and looks very nice, you can see it on my website 3rd or 4th picture. Good Luck-------------------- My Little Reef (http://community.webtv.net/swt1968/MyLittleReef)

If this is not what your talking about I suggest that you try to get it under control either way,

Supergook,
What you have looks like Padina. Don't know about the other. Maybe a similar red form Mesophyllum? They're both calcareous I think.--MJB

Crawdad1, Yes you right this algae you circle is cyano, I am taking about the big red one mushroom like stuff. This rock is in the LFS, and they face an outbreak of cyano that are now under control.

fishgills, definitive to the touch is like a rose peddle. How is your algae doing? I mean grow like crazy?, is an invasive algae or can be controlled very easy? assuming of course that this is the same that you have.

I am asking these questions because it's very cool, and I would like to cut a piece of it and glue in another rock for my tank. The red color is so intense under MH that I haven't seen anything so red before. I have red mushroom but nothing compare with this red.

Thanks,
Eduardo

If it feels like rose peddles its the same as i have, its not a bad alge, i just prune it once a month, maybe once every two months, if you don't the peddles will get large, i like the peddles small, when people see my tank thats the first thing they ask about, its quite colorful, mine is a deep maroon color, hope that helps, good luck--------My Little Reef (http://community.webtv.net/swt1968/MyLittleReef)
