I purchased the first coral for my new 20 Long reef tank last weekend. The tanks been set up with 18lbs of cured live rock for about 10 weeks now. I was planning on getting some mushrooms or a star polyp, but he had a gorgous open brain that didn't appear to be damaged in shipping. This is very rare, usually the brains are in pretty rough shape by the time they get here. Photo's below under normal and Actinic lighting.

Now I just need to know exactly what type of brain this is, I can't seem to find any photo's of a similar looking one. For one thing there arn't any mouths visible.

And how do care for it? Direct feed? Filter foods? No foods?

My lighting is 1x65W 50/50 PC and 1x17W actinic. The brain is currently on the rockwork, about 6" below the surface. Should I leave it there or move it down to the substrate?

Thanks all

Phil

Lobophylia is what type of brain. It is photosynthetic but sp feeding of mysis and cylcopeeze will help it's growth rate. PC's and better will be ok for lighting low to medium flow requirments. For placement the rock work is fine for a lobo since it has more of a rock base and does not overhang it's skeleton like a trachy does.

Thanks! I'd about given up on getting a brain after seeing the condition most arrive in. So haven't done much research into them.
