want to add but don't want to waist my canister

i just had a question i decided that i am going to add a sump/refugium but i do not want to waist the money i paid for the canister by getting rid of it completely so i wanted to know what does everyone think about using the canister as the return pump? any answers will help.

The canister functions as a closed loop, I don't think you can run it open in the sump.

However, if you put the refugium above the tank you could have the canister pump up to the fuge and have the fuge gravity feed to the tank.
