Hey guys -

I'm not ready for a reef tank yet. I'm still mastering the art of keeping my neon tetras alive. ;-)

But I'm interested in building my own tank, out of acrylic. I was thinking I'd like to build an unusual shape, nothing complex or too big, just a starter project that would be something different - I'm wondering if I couldn't build a tank to put along the back of my desk?

Maybe 48" long x 12" tall x 7" deep? That's what, about 20 gallons...

Is this a terrible idea for some reason I'm not thinking of? Is it a viable first project? Any thoughts on design or construction would be appreciated...

I don't see were that would be a problem for some fresh water fish. but i don't think there is a lot of room for salties to swim around in being only 7" deep, maybe a pair of false percs.

Have you considered buying a 30 long. I have one. It's 48x12x12.
