I am looking to buy a return pump that is extremly quiet and energy efficient. The pump is going to be used as a return pump but only needs to match my skimmers needs (1.5x 120g) becuase I am using a CL for circulation. I havent figured out how many bends there will be in my plumbing to actualy figure out pressure but I will probably need around 300-350gph.

Any help will be appreciated

Eheim 1250 or a Mag 3 looks like good choices right now

MJ1200 is 295...

MJ1200's cant handle the head pressure ... the calculator on reefcentral says it comes out to 0 gph after 4 feet and 1 elbow. Eheim comes out at 199 gph and mag 3 comes out at 254 gph

I need 180gph but the calculator could be off so Eheim 1250 looks like the closest to what I need.

Go with the Eheim.

The Eheim is a better bet.

i'm running two eheims right now and I can't hear them at all. Definitely go with the eheim.

You can't beat the Eheim. They are super quiet, handle head pressure well and, if properly maintained, will last forever.

Eheim it is

You should be very happy with the Eheim. I had tried numerous pumps trying to quiet the noise in my room down. Finally I stumble on the Eheims and this solved my problem. I now have two running, one for my chiller and one for my return.

Hmmm... Eheim users, answer, please:
I bought Eheim 1250, it's in the sump side-by-side with main tank, connected with the tank by usual black J-tubes (no drilling or overflow box). Sump and tank walls are tight close because of the rim size that tightly fits into J-tube curve. Eheim transfers vibration on the glass, hum is quite strong and audible, at least louder than Fluval 404 canister filter.

Are you using cushion pads, soft tubing or something?
Sorry for invading thread, but quietness of Eheim 1250 is questionable. Thanks!

I think it will depend on how you mount the eheim -- what it is pressing against, and the rigidity of the connection between the eheim and your U-tube setup. It sounds like you have everything fairly tightly together due to constraints imposed by the u-tube. Any vibrations from the pump will be transmitted through a rigid connection, as well as through the pump to any surface it is touching.

If you have the pump connected to the U using flexible tubing, and the pump is not wedged into the side of the sump, but is simply resting on the bottom, then either you have a defective pump, or you need a littel cushion underneath the pump. If your setup is more "rigid" then that is likely the source of the noise and your problem.

I had a eheim 1250 as a return and I was happy with it. I am now using a quiet one 1200 (296 gph, 25 watts) and I can't tell the difference between noise level and flow. I would go for the quiet one 1200 b/c you can get it for 21.99 from www.petsolutions.com whereas the eheim uses 28watts and costs 69.99.

I've had two Quiet Ones and both had restart problems. Upgraded to an Eheim and very satisfied. Yes, they are both very quiet but I've never had a problem with the Eheim starting.

Pertaining to noise, I have connected my Eheim 1262 to my piping with a section of tubing to "buffer" vibration and added rubber feet to the base of the pump. It is very quiet.

the calculator is wrong then.

they definitely can handle 4' of head. I'm using one for a return right now.

Quiet One 3000? I use the 4000's and done't have a restart problem if I clean them every 6 months or so.

You'll have to jurry-rig some rubber feet (silicon air hose or old suction cups work) or the Eheim 1250 is pretty loud in transferring vibration.

Thanks for the help with vibration transmission! My Eheim was resting against the glass at two sides.
