Hello all,

I have been reading this site for a few days and WOW ! A lot of info. I am new and would like to get some feedback from the pros. I finally convinced the boss(wife) to buy a skimmer, I have chosen ASM. What size should I buy ? This will be a reef tank and I thought the G3 but I have read that there are some of you running the G4 and G5 on 90 gallon tanks. BTW, I love the mods that are out there. Any help or links would be great, thanks !

Tom

Also,
I have found a ASM G4+ delivered to my door for $359.00. Does anyone know of a better price ?

Thanks, Tom

I'm running a G3 on my 120 gal and I'm happy with it. $359 sounds like a pretty good price too. Thats less than what I paid to get my G3.... damn canadian customs. I say go for it.

Hi whatcaneyedo,

The reason I am asking is because if I go with the G3 I can use the extra money towards something else, unless the G3 is not enough. Would you say the G3 is more than enough for you ?

I've seen the G3 rated at 180g a few places and not the 250g that ASM says. So 156 should be ok. You can always add the recirc mod to get more out of it.

I have a 72g with the G3 and it was only because, a) it fit, b) only $30 more than the G2 and it gives me room to upgrade.

I have heard that the new octopus skimmers beat the crap out of ASM's.

I have a G3 (recirc and gate valve mods) on a 38 gallon with 40 gallon sump. It is the best skimmer I have ever owned. That being said I think that if I had to do it over again I would try to find something better. I am not thrilled with the build quality and I absolutely hate how jerry rigged the pump fits into the body with the recirc mod. I really wish that I could afford a deltec or something of that caliber.

Check into the octopus skimmers before committing to the ASM.

i have an ASM g3 on my 125. It totally rocks. I get nasty smelly sludge, and its very consistant. never have to mess with it.

Hi mg426,
Is the pump on the skimmer loud ?

A G3 recirc'd would be good for your setup.

The difference between the G3 and the G4X is a lot, as far as price, sizes, and performance goes (I owned both)

Again thank you all for your input. I have slept on it and decided to buy the ASM G4+ @ $359.00 delivered. I base my decision on your input, friends tanks, LFS, price, and gut instinct. It should arrive this week and I will keep you posted.

I hope you are happier with your G4 than I am with my G3.

I can't wait to win the lottery so I can buy a deltec.

I think you'll like that.

Theres a MONSTER difference between a 6" skimmer and an 8" skimmer.

Don't get me wrong it is a good skimmer I just think it should pull more skimmate and I think the build quality is horrendous. Adding the recirc mod adds to the less than stellar craftsmanship. It has a "I did this with my toolbox " feel. I get so frustrated every time I try to put it back together.

In all honesty my whole life is a toolbox (property manager/handyman). I think everything in life has room for modification. I actually appreciated your post, along with others, to give me what I wanted to hear. Ya know... what is wrong with this thing. Everyone will tell you they have the best skimmer and you should buy it... But what I also like to hear is what I can do to make this thing better. I hope this is the skimmer that carries me over the top with expectation. I don't mind how it looks because it will be hidden behind my wall. :)
